Here’s a little known fact about Wyoming: In the olden days when Buffalo roamed these lands, undisturbed by the trappings and facsimiles of modern life, they were the first jazz composers. No, we didn’t just make up a bogus fact for the sake of argument. Scientists have unearthed old skeletons of entire bison herds positioned as a traditional jazz band would be, thought to have been composing smooth, easy-listening jazz. In the years since, history has been skewed by biases of “the man,” but, now you know the truth.
Regardless of what you may have heard, you have the opportunity to listen to some classic and contemporary pieces of jazz literature this Sunday, November 13, at 7:30 pm. Sheridan College has recently completed their new concert hall, the Whitney Center for the Arts, and, coincidentally, the Sheridan College Jazz Ensemble will hold their first concert in the new hall this weekend. With works by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and George and Ira Gershwin, it’s fixin’ to be quite the evening, one that you definitely shouldn’t miss.
The ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Eric Richards, will also be playing a piece by, well, Eric Richards. Turns out, Sheridan is a pretty hip town, it’s jivin’, as they say, and recently Richards moved here to continue his composing and teach at the college. A sought-after expert on the genre, he’s composed pieces for bands across the nation and beyond.
A talented conductor, a practiced ensemble, and a beautiful new concert hall want to fill your Sunday evening with chords and melodies you’ll be jazzed to hear. We’ll see you November 13 at 7:30 pm in the brand new Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College.
